The same hall, with the same tables and the same decoration, looks completely different when the light comes from the walls and the tables instead of from the ceiling fixtures.

In practical terms, it does three things: it hides whatever you would rather not be seen, it draws the eye to what you want noticed (the couple's table, the dance floor, the cake), and it allows your photographer to keep working after sunset without relying on flash. Those three things together are the reason lighting usually delivers more than a more expensive decoration budget.

What lighting does that you will never see in the venue's photos

Venues are usually photographed in the afternoon, in natural light. Most of your reception, however, will take place after sunset, and at that point the space is whatever the light makes of it.

What changes, specifically:

The height of the room. Light that climbs the walls makes a hall feel taller. Light coming from above pushes the ceiling down on top of you.

The colour. A warm amber removes the cold cast from white walls and flatters skin tones in every photograph.

The focus. A properly lit couple's table automatically becomes the centre of the room.

The flow. A darker perimeter and a bright dance floor tell your guests where to go, without a single announcement.

The main types of reception lighting

Uplighting (wall lighting)

Floor-standing fixtures that shine upwards around the perimeter of the room. It is the most cost-effective option: with 12–20 units, the entire colour identity of the space changes. It works on white or light-coloured walls; on dark stone the colour gets absorbed and you need more units placed closer to the surface.

Fairy lights and string lights

Strings of bulbs across the ceiling or above the dance floor create the most recognisable summer look. Outdoors they need anchor points (trees, columns, a pergola) and they have to be planned on site, not over the phone. String lights with larger bulbs perform better in open spaces; fairy lights work best indoors and on details.

Chandeliers and pendant lights

They add vertical volume above the dance floor or the couple's table. They require an inspection of the ceiling and the rigging points; many venues do not allow drilling, so we work with truss or existing suspension points.

Pinspots

Small, narrow beams aimed at specific points: floral centrepieces, the cake, the dessert table. Negligible cost, a huge difference in the detail photographs.

Dance floor lighting

Moving heads or wash lights that change the mood the moment the music starts. The rule is simple: the earlier in the evening, the more discreet. Strong, moving light belongs at the peak of the party, not at dinner.

Wedding lighting by type of venue

The same design does not suit every venue. Here is what we pay attention to in each case:

Indoor hall. The easiest scenario. Uplighting around the perimeter, pinspots on the tables, dance floor lighting. What matters is being able to switch off or dim the venue's general lighting; if the house lights are on/off with no dimmer, all the work is undone.

Estate with gardens. Here lighting also becomes signage: pathways, steps, entrances. It calls for care with cabling and weatherproof units, because the evening humidity is very real.

Beachfront venue in Halkidiki. Two things behave differently: the wind and the salt. Tall, slender structures need ballast, and string lights need more slack to cope with the tension. There are also no walls for uplighting, so the light has to come from below, from objects, or from suspended points.

Terrace or rooftop. Limited power and usually a ban on rigging. This is where battery-powered floor units and table lamps come into their own.

Church courtyard or ceremony site. A discreet layer of light along the path and at the ceremony spot, if it takes place after dusk. Nothing coloured; warm white is the safe choice.

Colour: how much and which

The most common mistake is too much colour, too saturated. Three rules that keep the result elegant:

One colour for the room during dinner, in a soft shade. Amber, warm pink, deep blue.

Changes only on the dance floor. After the first dance, things can get bolder.

Never green or strong purple on surfaces where people are seated. Skin looks unflattering in every photograph and it cannot be fixed in editing.

If you are unsure, warm white with a golden tone works almost every time and never dates in the photographs.

What to ask before you book

How many uplighting units are included, and for how long?

Are they wireless or do they need cabling? Who is responsible for covering the cables?

Can the scenes change during the evening, or is the lighting static?

Who coordinates with the photographer and the videographer?

What happens in case of rain, if part of the event is outdoors?

What time does setup take place, and how long does the teardown take?

The last point matters in practice: many estates have a strict departure time, and an installation that needs three hours to pack down has to be planned for in advance.

Lighting and sound together

When the lighting and the sound are handled by the same crew, you gain two things. First, the power and the cabling are planned once: fewer cables, fewer points of failure. Second, the lighting follows the music: when the evening moves into a new phase, the picture changes with it, without anyone having to work out who to notify.

At the weddings we take on, the moment where this shows most is the first dance: the perimeter lighting fades out and two beams land on the couple, exactly on the first bar. When the light and the music are in two different pairs of hands, they rarely land on the same second. See how we approach wedding sound coverage.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book the wedding lighting?

Together with the sound and the DJ, which means 8–12 months ahead for the peak months (May to September). A site visit is also needed before the proposal is finalised.

Does uplighting work in every venue?

Not with the same result. It needs surfaces to light. In open beachfront venues with no walls, the lighting relies on suspended points, trees and floor units.

Can the lighting match our wedding colours?

Yes, modern fixtures can be set to a specific shade. It is a good idea to look at a sample together at the venue, because the colour on the wall is never exactly the one in the palette.

What does the venue need to provide in terms of power?

It depends on the installation. A typical LED uplighting set is very economical, but combining it with sound, projection and catering calls for independent circuits. We check this during the site visit and, where necessary, we recommend a generator.

Is lighting worth it if the reception is at midday?

Less so, but it still has its place. If the celebration continues after dusk, dance floor lighting and a basic perimeter layer transform the second half of the event.

Request a proposal for your venue

Lighting is designed around your specific venue, not sold as a package. Send us the venue, the number of guests and the time the reception starts, and we will prepare a proposal with what works there.

Find out more about the wedding lighting we provide, or get in touch through our contact page.

Wedding lighting: how uplights, fairy lights and chandeliers transform the atmosphere of your reception, and what works in each type of venue.
